After harvesting and blending 2 different blocks of Napa Viognier, vintage 2010 marks the second release of a Gemella vineyard designate, Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard. This Gemella Viognier source is grown in a small sun-kissed and windswept hillside block in the cooler southern end of Carneros in the Napa Valley. Winemaker Jay Buoncristiani collaborated with famed grower Larry Hyde and his two sons to dial in the Viognier to optimum quality for crafting world class white wine. Harvest timing was essential, allowing for full flavor development and phenolic maturity in the skins of the Viognier berries. Once the desired flavors were at their peak, the fruit was hand harvested in the early cold morning and gently whole cluster pressed. The juice was then slowly fermented by both native and specially selected yeast in a combination of small stainless steel drums and neutral French oak barrels. Upon dryness, barrel stirring of the lees commenced to increase the complexity of the aromas and mouthfeel. Malolactic activity was suppressed so as to preserve the true Viognier aromas and flavors and maintain the crisp acidity in the finish. The multiple barrel and stainless steel components were then blended and bottled after 6 months of sur lie aging. The ultra complex aroma profile of this wine exhibits layers of fresh white peaches, caramelized apricots, honeysuckle, orange blossom, subtle vanilla, and sweet spices. Flavors on the palate mirror white stone fruits, minerals, and exotic spices with a full body, vibrant acidity, and a long lingering finish.
